Where Does Macrocarpa Fit in the NZ Building Code?Macrocarpa, Lusitanica, Lawson Cypress and Leyland all come under the single Cypress description in the building Code. For durability purposes, the Building Code classifies heart Cypresses as similar to H3.1 treated radiata pine. Where necessary a 'Producer Statement' confirming 'Heart' material should be requested from the supplier. MacDirect has again recently had our No1. framing grade tested with test results confirming strength rating equilavent to MSG8-MSG10. However presently we cannot "verify" this when supplying timber. MacDirect sells stuctural grade timber as graded No1. Framing (VSG6). The new 3604 NZ Standards is Radiata Pine and Douglas Fir specific, so does not apply to cypress and other alternative timbers. A full set of House-Tables exists in the Light timber framing standard NZ 3604 for the No.1 Framing grade. Verifications of structural properties to a higher grade are possible at the users instigation (engineer verified) Building code NZS 3602 shows Macrocarpa/Cypress can be used for - Exterior: Cladding/weatherboard, fascia, barge boards etc Interior: Structural beams, posts, framing, sarking, flooring Where outside pergolas require Building Code Compliance it is suggested a 15 year life is requested rather than a 50 year. Where there is doubt, check with your local Building Authority/Council. They will approve well graded Macrocarpa where it is allowable in the Building Code. |
